Lockout is a safety procedure that ensures workplace injuries are minimalised by having a piece of equipment disabled by a physical locking device. This ensures that it cannot be inadvertently activated or used by someone when it is not safe to do so.

Lockout devices have been developed so that a worker can de-activate a piece of equipment and ensure that it won’t be restarted by placing on a padlock, to which only they hold the key.
